Russell Wilson Responds at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Over Jaxson Dart Comments

NY Giants quarterback Russell Wilson didn't mince words on online platforms this week, reacting to recent comments from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.

"Classless... but not surprised...," Wilson declared via social media. "Didn't realize you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the media."

The quarterback's remarks pointed to the notorious bounty scandal controversy from 2009 to 2011, when Payton was coaching the Saints.

During that period, the NFL determined that the Saints had rewarded players for making aggressive tackles on rival teams. As a result, Payton was suspended from the league for a full year.

The Cause of the Latest Exchange

Wilson's reaction came after Payton made remarks after the Broncos' remarkable comeback win over the Giants. The coach remarked that the Giants had "discovered new energy" with their new QB, who has replaced Wilson as the first-string QB.

Moreover, Payton hinted that he had informed Giants owner John Mara that he would rather facing Wilson instead of Dart.

"I was talking to John Mara recently and I said, 'We hoped that change would've happened long after our game,'" Payton stated.

Background of the Wilson-Payton Relationship

  • The quarterback joined the Broncos from Seattle in 2022 and inked a 5-year, $245M extension.
  • The team went 4 wins and 11 losses in his debut year prior to Denver brought in Payton, who was coming back to the sidelines after a stint in broadcasting.
  • Payton replaced Wilson late into the 2023 campaign, a decision that ensured the quarterback from getting injured.

Had Wilson remained on the team by March 2024, his $37 million pay for the following year would have been locked in. Ultimately, Wilson was let go, marking the ugly split between the quarterback and his coach.
