Rob Edwards and O'Neil are two of the early candidates under consideration to succeed the former manager as head coach of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The previous coach was sacked on the weekend following the team's 10-match winless start to the top-flight season.
And Edwards and O'Neil - each of whom have historic links to the team - are part of the options to be considered by the Wolves leadership.
Edwards is presently at another club, which would create a possible hurdle to his hiring at Wolves' stadium.
Nevertheless the ex- Luton Town head coach - who played over a century of appearances for Wolves during his time as a player - is considered a strong candidate for the vacancy.
The mid-career manager is reportedly enjoys support from the Wolves directors as they start the search of appointing a fresh manager.
O'Neil is also appearing as a surprise contender, although he would be a surprising appointment given he was released by Wolves in December last year.
The former West Ham United player is out of work meaning Wolves would not be required to provide any buyout fee.
