Strong cold-season winds caused walls to collapse upon fragile shelters sheltering Palestinians uprooted by conflict in Gaza, claiming the lives of no fewer than four individuals. This tragedy highlights the dangerous situation that continue after more than 24 months of intense airstrikes and severe shortages of humanitarian assistance.

Truce Provides No Respite from Severe Elements

Although a ceasefire has been in effect from last fall, aid groups report that residents do not have the adequate housing necessary to survive frequent cold-weather events.

Officials at Gaza City's largest medical facility, which took in the victims, reported on this week that the deceased were a pair of adult females, a girl, and a male adult.

Separately, the local health authority announced on Tuesday that a 12-month-old infant succumbed of hypothermia overnight.

"The world has enabled us to experience loss of life in every possible way," stated a family member following the burial. "It’s true the shelling may have paused for now, but we have seen every conceivable cause of death in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Family Crushed in Tent Collapse

According to the medical center, 3 people of a single household — 72-year-old a man, his teenage granddaughter, and his daughter-in-law — were fatally injured when an eight-metre high wall fell onto their tent in a area near the sea of the city. No fewer than 5 others were hurt in the incident.

Family members on Tuesday began removing the debris that had buried their family and reconstructing the tent shelters for those who remained.

Humanitarian Distribution and Ongoing Crisis

United Nations agencies and its aid organization allies were handing out tents, tarps, warm covers and clothes as well as food and sanitation items across Gaza, stated the relevant UN coordination body.

The majority of Palestinians reside in improvised shelters since their homes were turned into rubble over the course of the hostilities. Humanitarian organizations contend not enough shelter materials are reaching Gaza under the ceasefire.

Fatality Figures Since the Truce

The Gaza health ministry, part of the Hamas-run government, reports over 440 people have been fatally shot by gunfire and their bodies brought to hospitals since the truce went into effect. A spokesperson for UNICEF, spokesperson for the UN children's fund, said on that day that at least 100 minors under the age of 18 – sixty males and 40 females – had been lost their lives since the truce started due to military operations, such as drone strikes, air raids, tank shelling and use of bullets. Those figures, he explained, represented cases where enough details had been compiled to justify recording, but the total toll is believed to be greater. He noted that hundreds of minors had been injured.

"Although 'explosions and shootings have slowed' under the truce, they have not ceased," Elder informed journalists at a press conference in Geneva by video link from Gaza City. "So what the international community now terms calm would be viewed as a crisis anywhere else," he said.

Another Winter of Hardship

Gaza’s population of more than two million individuals has been fighting to fend off the freezing temperatures and bad weather away while facing lack of humanitarian aid and a lack of sturdier temporary housing, which is urgently needed during the colder season. This marks the third cold season since the war between Israel and the group started on a date in late 2023, when fighters stormed into Israeli territory and murdered approximately 1,200 individuals and abducted two hundred and fifty-one more into Gaza.

The local health authority reports more than 71,400 Palestinians have been fatally injured in the subsequent military campaign.
