Democrats Denounce Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Execution
Lawmakers from the Democratic party voiced anger after former President Donald Trump alleged a coalition of Democratic representatives of being "turncoats" and asserted they should be arrested and punished "through capital punishment" following their posting of a contentious video.
The Content That Triggered the Debate
The clip, published on earlier this week, includes six Democratic lawmakers who in the past served in armed forces or defense roles.
"As we did, you all swore an pledge to safeguard and support this constitution," the lawmakers declared in the short video. "Currently, the dangers to our governing document don't only come from overseas, but from domestically. Our regulations are explicit, you can reject unlawful commands, you can refuse illegal orders, you have to reject improper directives. No one has to carry out orders that violate the legal system or our national charter."
Donald Trump's Furious Response
The clip seemed to trigger a heated reply from the former president.
On later in the week, Trump posted on his preferred platform: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate post, he stated: "This is really bad, and Harmful to our Country. Their words cannot be permitted to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third message, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also shared a comment that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Party Officials Respond
Following Trump's statements on Thursday, Democratic leadership published a combined statement denouncing the comments.
"Political violence has no position in this nation," they declared. "Elected officials who were featured in the video all worked our nation with exceptional patriotism and honor. We clearly censure Donald Trump's disgusting and harmful calls for execution against members of Congress, and call on Republican lawmakers to vigorously do the same."
The opposition officials also mentioned that they had been in touch with law enforcement "to make certain the security of these members and their families."
"Donald Trump must immediately take down these radical online messages and retract his violent rhetoric before he gets someone killed," the announcement continued.
Officials' Firm Answer
The representatives who appeared in the video also published a response.
"We identify as former service members and national security professionals who care for this country and took an vow to defend and support the founding document of the United States," they stated. "This commitment continues forever, and we plan to maintain it. No threat, pressure, or call for violence will stop us from that important duty."
"The most revealing aspect is that the ex-president views it liable to punishment by capital punishment for us to reiterate the law," they added. "Military personnel should know that we have their backs as they fulfill their vow to the founding principles and responsibility to adhere to only legal commands. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our responsibility."
They continued: "All citizens must join forces and denounce the ex-president's demands for our execution and partisan aggression. This is a period for moral clarity."
Further Governmental Responses
The Senate Democratic leader also denounced Trump's comments and shared on social media: "Let's be crystal clear: the former president is calling for the execution of elected officials."
He stated: "This is an outright THREAT. Each congressional member, every Representative, the entire nation – regardless of party – should censure this right away and unconditionally."
The Conservative official justified Trump's allegation that the Democrats had been involved in "rebellion", characterizing the video as "extremely improper", stating: "This constitutes very harmful, you have important representatives of the government telling military personnel to ignore directives, I think that's historic in the nation's past."
The Conservative representative also reportedly told journalists that in what he read of Trump's messages, Trump was "defining the violation of treason" but that "legal experts have to analyze the language and establish all that."
Executive Branch Statement
During a White House press conference on that day, when questioned by a reporter, "Would the president want to put to death congressional representatives?", the executive branch representative responded: "Certainly not."
"It's important to note about what the ex-commander in chief is responding to," the official declared. "You have current representatives of the American legislature who coordinated to orchestrate a recorded statement to members of the national defense, to active duty service members encouraging them to ignore the president's legal commands."
She said: "The purity of our military relies on the chain of command, and if that chain of command is broken, it can result in people getting killed, it can cause chaos, and precisely what these congressional representatives ... are essentially promoting."
