The British designer Antony Price, the influential style architect responsible for a series of unforgettable images worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has passed away at the age of 80.

Price was best known for his defined forms and theatrical styles, most notably the soft-colored suits that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement across their platforms."

This news arrives less than a month after he debuted his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress inspired by the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.

A Lasting Legacy

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price headed for London during the sixties to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he began designing menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was behind the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with outfits on model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the wedding dress Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping body-hugging looks established him as a "genuine original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

During the nineties, he began working on ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included a number of outfits for her American tour after becoming Duchess.

After a career spanning half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Performative Style: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

Design circles mourns the loss to a true visionary whose impact on fashion and music remains profoundly felt.
