‘All those little things – make sure you do them’: The striker’s road from injury table to goals with Athletic

Whenhe initial occasion the Athletic striker featured in English soil, an young playing for the youth squad against Bundesliga youth at the English ground in fall 2015, he scored. On his next visit he played in England, against Sunderland two months later, he netted. The third time, against the Citizens not long later, sure enough, he did it once more. Upon his comeback to Manchester to play against the Red Devils at Leigh’s ground in that year, he scored again. It was a superb volley, also. “Truly,” he says, “it’s one of the best goals in my career.” Thus the club did what they had to do: he was replaced.

“I was furious,” the attacker says, before breaking into laughter. “Probably there’s a recording. Our match against United and I performed well. I wasn’t allowed to feature the latter period: I was without a signed agreement, I was scoring goals, many stories circulated, you know how it is. No confirmation on Newcastle being interested, but I came across reports about the Red Devils, the typical thing. It’s unclear if it was accurate, but supposing an offer came, I’d have chosen to stay at Athletic. I’m fortunate to be here.”

La Real relieve strain with extraordinary derby triumph

At the facility, the Basque Country, the early training is ready to commence; following that, the short journey to the airport and another flight to England, on this occasion to take on the Magpies in the Champions League on Wednesday. Uttering the name lights him up. It has become a tough year for Athletic, partly because of the demands of their participation. Defeated late on in the derby on Saturday, they have won only one of their recent league fixtures and been defeated by Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund in European competition. Yet, take in the big picture, the big nights he has lived and upcoming events, and a sense of thankful reflection about him.

In the three years since he had rejoined the team, Gorka has been a final four contender in Europe, stopped at the gates a final at home by United, and has ridden an historic vessel through the waterway accompanied by a million fans after securing the Spanish cup, the team’s initial silverware in a long wait. Now he is the top goal-getter in the Champions League, where they are countercultural and debuting in a decade. “I couldn’t have pictured this,” he admits.

Guruzeta thought it difficult enough just to make the first team and that proved true. Born to the former Real Sociedad player his father and a dedicated fan at the club that are now his rivals, Guruzeta is a graduate of Antiguoko, the Donostiarra team that nurtured Mikel Arteta, the legendary midfielder and the tactician. His move to Athletic came at his teens but after his top-level debut in that summer, he experienced a ACL injury, the cut, a drop in category and a return before he could finally secure an opportunity, coming back aged 26 to experience the peak of their lives.

Gorka Guruzeta in training
Gorka Guruzeta is preparing to face Newcastle in the Champions League.

“Entering the youth system doubting you’ll make the top level but each step you advance through you’re still there and you can notice the proximity. You get there but … you have to leave.” He had limited game time in a handful of matches between his first game and February 2019. “And then I go back down to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Five, six games with them and I suffered the ACL injury.

“It was a huge blow but I reflect on it as a turning point because it made me change the way I saw things. Recovering from a long-term injury is hard, but it helps. You develop habits you didn’t have. It’s not about neglect, but I would go to training and then head home, like when you’re a kid. In the facility, facilities are comprehensive, so do everything. Practice, prevention. Strength training. Should your hips be uneven, work on that. Assuming ankle mobility is good, enhance it further. Every small aspect: perform them.

“Among professionals you’re going to crash into players who have experienced contact 200,000 times. Extremely powerful. I look at photos of me before: my physique was slight. Thus incidents occur. Look at pictures of me now and the change is dramatic. The setback taught me. Training finishes, but additional work remains. Teammates are set, really ready; the same applies.”

You also have to play. The striker moved upset in 2020, at 23 years old, moving to a lower level. With Sabadell in that season, he got three strikes in forty appearances. With Amorebieta in the latter part of the season, the he found his form. “Many experience this: loans, terminated contracts. Should you reverse it, work, believe, and when eventually they need someone where you play, a return could happen. Readiness is vital. Upon the recall, an aspiration fulfilled. Lifting the cup, European football, and qualify for Europe’s top tier … pfff.”

No wonder he says appreciate the experience. Especially after last year which, sometimes, was about endurance. Previously the main threat with sixteen goals, last season he got seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
